The mask fits nicely and is actually quite durable but I find the provided filter inadequate (Luckily I also purchased a techno filter twin pack), but the main thing that bugs me is the fact that the valves that came with the Sportsta mask actually remain open (they only close when inhaling large amounts, and quickly open afterwards). I changed the valves with my old techno mask and now the mask filters nicely, but I still wonder if the valves were designed like this or if something went wrong somewhere. Besides all that I still think this is a great product as it significally reduces the amount of chimney smoke and exhaust fumes I have to inhale.
RESPRO’NSE: “The Sportsta mask comes with a Particle filter included which works best for small and fine particulates less than 1 micron. The Techno Filter is more specifically designed for those who need protection in the urban environment where there is a mix of pollutants in the air. The POWA valves on the Sportsta are only open when you breath out. This is to help expel air when breathing at elevated rates when cycling or running. When breathing in the valve closes. Please contact customer services if you need more detailed advice”
7 years I use a Respro mask every working day (20km bike per day in a 1 million people populated town) and it’s just the begining !
I notice I don’t have as much respiratory disorders than before.
Using Respro masks is a benefit for you, AND it raise awareness for cars conductors (and other polluting vehicules).
I bought two sportsta masks, one in black and one in pink. The pink one is more stylish of course. They were both very easy to breath in surprisingly. I just wore them around the house for a while because I was hoping to get used to them as I’m planning to go to China this year. I hope that the sportsta masks will be also made in other colours like white, green, yellow, silver and gold for example. I’d definitely buy more of them in future.
I bought the Sportsta Mask primarily as an attempt to treat, at least partly, my pretty severe pollen-allergies. This mask has been a godsend for me, the majority of my symptons disappear within roughly 10-minutes of equipping this mask.
The primary reason I don’t give this a 5/5 is because, for obvious reasons, you can’t sleep in the mask. When you’re resting, your heartrate goes down and so does your breathing. Which means that you don’t expel the air sufficiently, which means that you’re partly breathing the same air which isn’t a good idea. (Duh!)
Secondly, the strap could be better. I would’ve liked if Respro designed a strap that doesn’t rest on your neck, but more on the back of your head, perhaps going above the ears. Right now it pushes down quite a lot on your nose, while being somewhat loose at and around your chin. Its not uncomfortable to the point of being a nuisance, its just not as good as it could’ve been.
Besides that, it does what its supposed to very well - Give you clean air!
RESPRO’NSE: “Thanks for the review. There will be news coming very soon on a new headstrap that can be fitted to your existing mask so watch this space!!”
Having used a Sportsta every working day for a year (a job that involves making deliveries by bicycle in a capital city), I have been thankful for having this item at my disposal.
Given that I am using the road network, the help the Sportsta has given in reducing my inhalation of fumes has been immense. To be fair, it is not the most appropriate mask for these conditions and so I have asked a friend of mine who runs a bike shop to order me up an Ultralight mask and I can keep the Sportsta for use in mountain biking.
The Sportsta served me well, although after such regular use the nose-bridge developed a crack that slowly crept up the ridge and snapped. I got in touch with Respro via this website enquiring about a repair and the customer services team could not have been more responsive and helpful - and extremely prompt too. *
I would not hesitate in recommending this company and its products to any interested party. Indeed, on a couple of occasions I have been asked by passers by about the mask and have been happy to tell them the benefits.
Good work, Respro.
* Thank you, Harry.
I’m about to buy the Sportsta to help me with hay/grey fever I developed due to daily commuting on bike on busy London streets. I would like to ask how long the filter last with daily usage on busy city like London (about 2x 30 minutes ride every day)? Can I wash the filter?
RESPRO’NSE: You will certainly notice a difference wearing a mask on the busy London streets which are currently the most polluted in Europe! For more information on our filters and usage, please see the FAQ’s, bottom of page.
This mask is effective against my allergy to tobacco smoke, and it does not prevent me from breathing effectively. However, I get strange looks from people and I think it is better to keep it around my neck and pull it only when I need it (busy streets, bus stops, commercial zones):However, this does not work because the filter tends to glide, if I put it too fast. A suggestion would be to have something to hold the filter in place.
RESPRO’NSE: ’ Please check this video to ensure you filter is in your mask correctly. It should not move around as it is attached to the mask with the valve assembly. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2XIXeCVmVw
This is a question, as I am intending to purchase a sporta for daily use on a bike for hay fever: can anyone tell me whether the pink mask gets less hot than the black one?
RESPRO’NSE: “Anything black will absorb more heat than anything white so yes the surface of the black mask will get hotter than the pink one. I hope this help”
Can you please make this mask in a skin color, white color, or pastel purple or something? The black is too manly and the pink is too girly ... both stand out when wearing…
RESPRO’NSE: ” We produce a white Allergy Mask which is light weight. You can customize it with white gold/silver POWA Elite valves. Like all Respro Masks once you have the right size, the filters are interchangeable so chose your favorite and hey presto you will have your ideal sporty mask!”
Great Product!! I have been using the mask daily for the last 2 weeks on my commute to office. Thats roughly 90 mins of usage a day in heavy indian traffic. The mask cuts out the smoke, dust and odours and makes the drive a lot more bearable.
Two simple tips for daily usage:
1. Use a mouthwash
2. Wash the filter weekly
I have been searching for a cure for my cold weather sinus issues that I have after a jog for quite sometime. For some reason I suffer from Vasomotor rhinitis, also referred to as non-allergic rhinitis when running in temps bellow about 50 degrees F. I have tried taking numerous over the counter anti-histamine and nasal sprays, but they did not completely stop my sneezing and congestion that I have after a run. Many of these episodes would last up to 48 hours. I love running in the cold and I can say since owning the Sportsa Mask I have been able to do that with no sinus issues at all. It takes a few runs to figure out your breathing, but I would much rather deal with that than have to run inside on a treadmill or suffer through my sinus problems. I highly recommend this mask to anyone else who experiences what I do when running in cold weather! Thank you Team Respro!
Hi RESPRO Team
Last month I purchased a Sportsta Mask, I am very happy with the quality of the product and the protection it offers. I live in Bogota Colombia, a city at 2600m above sea level, with more than a million and half vehicles of all types. I ride a motorcycle and the mask has made a difference in how I feel after a long ride in the city traffic.
Also thanks for not making any additional charges for delivery. Soon I will be buying from you another style mask.
Great product. Can really tell the difference between breathing with the mask on and off. Definitely recommend buying it.
I work and commute in the Ogden, UT. We get a lot of pollution from Salt Lake City which effects air quality and makes the daily bike commute difficult. I read a bunch of blogs and online reviews and finally settled on the Sportsta mask with a Techno filter. I am loving it. It makes the commute much more enjoyable and breaths well. It can get warm but it is worth it to not breath in the pollution.
RESPRO’NSE: “Thanks for your review. Great to hear the mask is working well for you.”
Great product. I live in a city that, especially in the winter months, has one of the highest concentrations of pollution (coal, auto, etc) in Europe. I’ve used my Sportsta mask and techno filters for the past year to run each morning and it has been great. Quite frankly, absent the mask - running would be impossible most days. I’ve steered a number of colleagues your direction, and at least three have purchased a mask for the same purpose. Mine is solid black, but love the new designs. Keep it up.
RESPRO’NSE: “Thanks for taking the time to write this review Ken. We here at Respro® are very happy to hear that you are benefiting from using you Sportsta Mask. Cheers for the recommendations”
I think that when a person breathes the air is able to go in also around the nose and in this way whole air isn’t, filtered completely?Which is your opinion?
RESPRO’NSE: “The mask should create a seal around the face and over the bridge of the nose. The nose clip is made so that it can be formed to your nose shape. Please see this video on how to fit a respro mask correctly. http://www.youtube.com/ResproMasks “
I live in Arizona and have a woodshop in my garage. There is a lot of dust from sanding and cutting. The Respro mask works great. I have no breathing problems at all and I’m able to work in my shop all day. Thanks Respro!
Respro is the most comfortable mask on the market. I think I’ve tried almost all of them.
I always wear my Mask when I ride my bicycle in traffic or even while running. I’m on my third Sportsta Mask. I left the second one in a rental car accidently. The first one I use around the house when I paint, glue, or clean the cat litter box… My filter of choice is the Aero carbon and hepa combo. I ride my bike, a P-38 recumbent, to and from work everyday and daily Mass Monday through Saturday. These masks last for a long time, around five years for me. The Sportsta Mask fails when the wetsuit material decomposes at the rear of the side vents and the nylon outer surface stretches and the fit suffers. One can’t tighten the mask enough anymore. I have had to sew the vent mesh back on and run many long strands of thread over and across where the rubber inside has decomposed. Maybe Respro can come up with a solution to reinforce this area and make it more durable and resistant to sweat. Also do a better job of sewing the vent mesh in as it has always come apart in every Sportsta Mask I’ve had. Overall though, a must have product for the urban commuter! Thank you, keep up the great work!
RESPRO’NSE: “Kevin, great to hear you are using your Respro® mask on a regular basis. They are an essential piece of kit for Recumbents as you are in the direct firing line of exhausts fumes from vehicles. And getting 5 years out of 1 mask which has had daily usage is pretty damn good in our book! Neoprene has a lifespan and it will eventually perish due to variations in air temperature as well as general wear and tear of the product. We always promise to replace broken parts if any part of the product breaks within the first few years but sadly it won’t last for ever. If it did we’d be out of business “
Great mask, I love it. I use it when airbrushing my illustrations with water based paints only. It works very well for light to medium spraying although I need a Respirator for really heavy spraying. I have to fit the mask up on the back of my head otherwise it slides down and doesn’t give a good seal around my nose and mouth. It is very easy to use and to change the filters. It’s comfortable to wear although it does hurt my ears after an hour or two. Most important it works and protects my lungs from paint particles. Also my glasses don’t mist up when I use it.
I like that there were more colors of masks.
The black color attracts a lot of sun and warms
RESPRO’NSE: “Have you seen the Pink Sportsta yet? We are also adding another great colour to the range soon. Watch this space”.
I like the mask. Easy to put on and it fits good.
My “go-to” essential for the smoggy Los Angeles air! I have been using a Sportsta mask for close to 20 years and I can truly say that both my lungs and sinus are much better off. True, it’s a bit warm but it just plain works. I will be a lifelong user! They are not cheap but still way less than a lung transplant!!
This mask really helps me get through the allergy season. Biking and running gets me out of breath quickly without it. A big improvement to my quality of life!
Maybe it is the shape of my face, but the mask seems a bit loose around the chin. A second strap above the ears might help to pull it a bit tighter there. Nevertheless, good job; keep improving!
Très bon produit, efficace pour une utilisation pour déplacement en vélo dans grande ville. Pour aller au travail.
Very good product, I use it for travel in the city. To go to work.
Very plessed, decent fit. I don’t seem to get as hot and I can breath when its hot. Was able to take out filter and clean easily. Neighbor asked me where I got it.
Your mask is very good. I wear it whenever I bike in Palermo (Sicily) and it protects very well from car pollution.
Would prefer the back head strap wasn’t only around the neck. Maybe a loop that goes around the ear in addition to keep the mask from feeling like it is going to drop down.
RESPRO"NSE: “Thanks for the suggestions Russel. I will forward them on to our design team”
The Sportsta Mask is great as it enables cycling during the pollen season even though I’m allergic. I’m also allergic to dust but I’ve arranged comfortably dusty things such as old piles of clothes and cleaned dusty places with the mask on. Inhaling gets a bit hard when cycling uphill but then again, I wouldn’t be able to cycle at all without the mask during the worst pollen season.
I have had asthma and allergies since I was little. I used to take some pills daily year round to keep it managable. One flight of stairs was enough to keep me breathing heavily for 10 minutes. Then I found that daily cycling helps. Then I found daily cycling with Respro Sportsa helps several times more effectively. I am not sure why, it just works that much better. My polen alergies are off the scale and yet I do not need any medication most days if I start the day by 40 minuts cycling to work with the mask on. I can live like a normal person thanks to this mask, not constatnly thinking about my health. So thank you Respro, you really made a difference in my life.
I have been using the Sportsta Mask for running for a couple years. I live in West Africa, where the seasonal Harmattan dust that blows down from the Sahara fills the air with dust. I had used a 3M dust mask before I got the Sportsta, and am pleased the the Sportsta Mask is much easier to breath through than the 3M mask. I run in the heat, and although the mask gets sweaty and needs rinsing, I do not find it too hot for use even on hot, sunny days. I have put in the Techno filter in the mask, and find this to be a comfortable and useful mask, even with a beard.
Have had my sportsta mask now for a number of years and it never fails to disappoint. Since upgraded the filter material to Techno when I needed replacements. Tend to wear my mask more in the winter months as the cold air used to effect my chest and start of my asthma. But not anymore whilst wearing this mask on my commute to and from work, no longer am I wheezing at the end of each journey.
The Sportsta mask is amazing! It is comfortable, easy to use, and keeps all the tiny micron particles out. I would definitely recommend this to anyone living in SLC.
I was so happy to learn about Respro, as I ride my bike to work year round in Salt Lake City, and am afraid of the inversion and the ill effects it has on one’s health.
Thanks Respro! I hope you get many more vendors to sell your masks in SLC, as your masks are ‘the BEST.’
I use the Sportsta mask and Sportsta filter. I really have noticed the difference between running 10km with and without it around Changsha, China. Without it, it has felt like my lungs are full of sand when I finished!
